Stick Welding Tips for Better Beads
Better stick welds come from controlling the arc and cleaning the joint, not from adding a more elaborate hand motion. Use the same electrode and joint for a practice session so you can see what each adjustment changes.
Improve one part of the bead at a time
| Observation after slag removal | Check first | Practice adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| Irregular width | Body support and travel consistency | Rehearse the movement with power off |
| Slag trapped along an edge | Joint access, angle and cleaning | Clean between runs and keep the pool visible |
| Repeated sticking | Product current range, connection and starting technique | Compare short starts on a separate coupon |
| Groove beside the bead | Arc length, heat, angle and travel | Make a controlled comparison without changing everything |
These are diagnostic prompts, not guaranteed cures. Similar-looking defects can have different causes. If you cannot see the weld pool, reposition the work or lighting before adjusting the machine.
Give your hand somewhere to travel
Arrange the coupon and leads so your wrist can move through the intended run. With the machine safe and the electrode not energized, rehearse the motion from start to finish. A comfortable start is not enough if the last part forces your arm against a clamp.
As the electrode shortens, maintain the working distance deliberately. Do not compensate for a long arc by rushing. Run shorter practice beads if fatigue makes it hard to keep the pool in view.
Judge the cleaned result
Remove slag before deciding whether the bead is smooth. Inspect both toes and the end crater. On a multipass practice joint, clean each pass rather than expecting the next one to consume trapped slag. Keep grinding from erasing the evidence before you have understood it.
Should every beginner weave the rod?
No. Start with a simple stringer bead. Weaving depends on electrode, joint, position and procedure; it is not a universal improvement.
Can more amperage fix a sticking rod?
Sometimes current is involved, but confirm the electrode's permitted range, connection and technique first. Stay within product and machine limits, and practice on noncritical scrap.
